Every Story’s Only Guesswork

‘On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.’
—Edward Mote

“The slipperiness of meaning, the impossibility of objectivity, the incommensurability of truth claims — these themes of postmodernism appealed to me and gave my faith room to grow.”—Tony Jones, emerging (postmodern) church movement

“In postmodern literary analysis, texts no longer have a particular meaning. They become images projected by an author and mean whatever we create them to say…..

“Postmodern thinkers have extrapolated their literary theories into a general philosophy of life, where everyone is a text and every part of society is a text. Literary theory is the backbone of postmodern ideology where truth is narrative, or story, and interpretation is substituted for reason.”
—Jim Leffel, “The Death of Truth”

Every Story’s Only Guesswork

There’s no reason I can think of!
That’s the Truth!.....Now think this through…
There’s no reason, son, don’t argue…
Look, THIS narrative is true!

Truth’s “constructed”…not objective,
Truth’s a phantom in the night…
Truth’s a ”bottom up” endeavor,
Truth’s whatever you think’s right.

Every story’s only guesswork….
Just hypothesis, you see.
There’s no “outside” truth or meaning .
Be your own Authority!

It’s “The Slipp’ry Slope Agenda”…
Nothing’s really right or wrong…
”Meaning” really has no meaning
(Can’t we all just get along?)

It’s the “Swamp Gas” of deception,
It’s the PoMo Toxic Waste …
It’s emerging, it’s converging!
And it’s here to suit your taste.

You’re the “text” that’s all-important.
That’s the reason you should say:
“There’s no reason I should listen
To ‘old stories’, anyway.”

Each interpretation’s faulty,
Every narrative impure.
Here’s a hope to put your faith in:
Even “god”’s not REALLY sure1.

Hop on board this magic carpet,
Where true Truth’s not really true…
It’s the PoMo Rug Emergent
Pulled from under me ‘n’ you.

God’s “in process”…God’s evolving2,
And his word’s not that concise…
God’s not “sov’reign”…God’s dependent
On postmodern man’s advice3.

Look, if Christ were still here with us,
If He WERE alive today,
He would be a PoMo Scholar…
He’d agree with what we say!

We’re quite sure He would confirm this…
(Yes,… if he were still around)
But, alas, He’s dead ‘n’ gone now.
True Truth’s buried underground.

Why He left us here as orphans4,
Why He left us high and dry…
We’re not sure, but we’re still working
For that Pie up in the Sky.

We’re constructing now “new” meaning!
Join this human project, man…
Grab a nine inch nail, and hammer,
(Never mind that sinking sand5.)

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
