Truth’s an Ill-Advised Illusion
Making “truth” claims are uncalled for…
We insist that you desist!
We won’t have it any longer…
We can’t co-exist with this!
We will hear of it no longer!
Son, we'll see you to the door!
Don't come back, young man....We mean it!
Don't disturb our Common Core!
[Postmodernism] “….a view that ultimately directly undermines all possibility of knowing objective truth (that is, truth that is true whether one believes it or not.) Postmodernism, as it applies to our everyday lives, is the death of truth as we know it.”
—Dennis McCallum (”The Death of Truth”, 1996)
Truth’s an Ill-Advised Illusion
You may think you’re “on to something”,
But we’re sure, sir, that you’re wrong!
We’ve thought long and hard about it…
We suggest you run along.
We’ve examined all the angles,
And we know you can’t be right!
We know “truth” is not so simple.
You should be, sir, more contrite!
We know you don’t want to hear this,
But the truth is… Truth’s unknown,
Truth’s an ill-advised illusion…
And like, man, “To each his own”.
All that “truth-talk” you’re engaged in,
We know now is just absurd….
Look, we’ve studied,… written papers!
And we’ll have The Final Word!
“Truth” is totally subjective,
That’s the truth we now embrace.
It’s the view we call “post-modern”…
It suits everybody’s taste!
You may be, boy, well-intentioned,
But the truth WE know is best.
We’ve examined your proposal…
It just doesn’t pass our test.
Truth is much more complicated
Than “the truth” you claim to know…
You’re a threat, son,… You’re a danger
To the Po-Mo Status Quo!
I’m afraid we must insist, sir,
That you leave “the truth” to us.
Sir, your teaching’s a perversion…
We suggest you “re-adjust”.
You’re confusing all the children
With your twisted heresy!
Your crusade, young man, is over…
(Look, go back to carpentry…)
“People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’”
—Luke 18: 15-17
“Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
—John 14: 5-7
Father, give us ears to hear You,
Truth toward us now reconciled…
May we turn to take the Bread, Lord,
Like a trusting little child.
Help us see dark Pride within us,
That denies this Saving Grace,
Resurrect the true Truth within us,
Help us see true Mercy’s Face.
When we doubt You, Lord, forgive us…
Give us eyes to see what’s true:
Truth Incarnate calling sinners,
Born again…the Cross in view.
