It’s a Fiction, But Who’s Counting?

Dr. Peter Woit, physicist and mathematician at Columbia University, recently had some words of wisdom for some of his colleagues (High Priests of Scientism?) regarding their currently fashionable, God-negating “String Theory”/”M-theory”…..

“In a time when the credibility of science is under attack, does anyone else see a problem with telling the public that the “Best Explanation for Everything in the Universe” that science has is a “theory” for which we have no definition or equations, no experimental evidence, and no likelihood of ever getting any?”

To his credit, Dr. Woit recognizes the problem.

After all, when legitimate scientific endeavor begins to resemble (at best) a scheme of “futile speculation1” and wishful thinking, and/or (at worst) a gussied-up branch of sorcery, it may be time to check one’s co-ordinates.

"If you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you." –Friedrich Nietzsche

It’s a Fiction, But Who’s Counting?

Never mind…We’ll call it “science”.
And why not?...What’s left to lose?
We can call it “Liberation”!
And proclaim it our “Good News”!

We can wave that Magic Wand, sir,
We can tell you what is real!
It’s a fiction, but who’s counting?
And that’s simply how we feel!

It’s the best that we’ve come up with.
It’s the best that we can do.
Come on in, and drink the Kool-Aid
That we mixed up just for you!

It’s what Scientism looks like
When you reach its Bottom Line.
Yes, The Noose of Naturalism
Seems no longer so divine.

Some might call it quite Abyss-mal
(Nietzsche peered into that pit.)
It’s the Golden Calf we’re left with…
Pride of Man that just won’t quit.

You might say it leaves you hangin’
Where no Meaning need apply.
It’s what happens at the end, sir,
When you’re swingin’ with The Lie.

Some insist the Final Measure
Is The Scientific Mind…
You know, Mankind, High and Mighty
(Or the blind who lead the blind).

Others know the simple Truth, though,
And He came to seek the lost.
Truth revealed to mourning sinners
Who first knew Him at the Cross.
