The current fashion within the ranks of many professing believers today is to declare that Jesus is really just a “good guy”….like a brother, like a friend, you know, like a lamb….safe, soft and cuddly to the max. Jesus, the Compromiser and Appeaser. When we say “Jesus is good”…what we really mean is, “Jesus is good,… just like us”.
Today the story often goes that God (despite what Jesus said), would never really condemn anyone to Eternal death (ie., to Eternal separation from God). The concept of “hell”, you see, just doesn’t feel right to us “moderns”. We love that divinely adorable, meek and mild baby lying in a manger. Nothing more, nothing less.
The Cuddle-God of grace and happy endings suits us just fine, thank you. (Shhhh….Just let him sleep….)
These days, we like our theology and our eschatology Fairy-Tailor-Made:
“And they all lived happily ever after.”
Jesus, The-Blanket-Amnesty-Provider, would never judge or criticize us harshly. After all, Lambs of God just wouldn’t do that…no matter what Scripture says!
