"Yet your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But it is their way that is not just."
—Ezekiel 33:17
The Bible teaches that justice…..true justice…is revealed from above, and that our concept of justice here on earth is an imperfect reflection of that which is truly True.
Divine Justice is Holy. It is perfectly untainted and pure….like a refining fire.
Human justice…that is, justice “under the sun”… always falls short of that Divine and Righteous Standard, that Standard we can know (in part, at least) but can never attain on our own.
We know in our heart of hearts that true Justice exists, but we also understand…(when we are honest with ourselves, at least)…. that we fail to ‘measure up’. As individuals, communities, and nations, we fall far short. The Bible calls this condition “Sin”.
And yet, somehow, we still recognize that we are held accountable to the higher standard of Justice.….The Divine and Holy Standard.
In an ordered universe, there must be Justice. And for there to be Justice, there must be true judgement.
(When we finally recognize our failure to measure up, we may then begin to understand our need for a Savior.)
Whatever is has already been,
and what will be has been before;
and God will call the past to account.
And I saw something else under the sun:
In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.
I said to myself,
“God will bring into judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.” —Ecclesiastes 3: 15-17
“Just” is just what mankind says, sir,
Under this hot, burning sun…
Just without God’s just a nightmare
From the barrel of a gun.
Just is just what “folks” are saying,
Justice just “evolves” that way!
Just is justice that’s elected
Year to year and day to day.
Just is just here IF we say so,
Just is just democracy.
Just is “Power to the people!”
If we all could just agree.
Justice is a “bottom-up” thing.
Just is up to her and him.
Often just The Bigger Stick, sir,
Often blowing in the wind.
You see, justice is subjective,
Just… for some… is not at all!
Justice is just mostly guesswork…
Just a toss-up….Make the call!
Just is just what I AM saying.
Just is Us defining crime.
Just is justice by consensus…
Mostly it’s just not in time.
How in the world can a perfectly Righteous, Just, and Holy God forgive unholy, sinful man without becoming stained with that sin Himself in the process?
Indeed, that IS the question……
Lord of Justice, please have Mercy!
We're unholy, blind, and lost....
Could there be, Lord, Love AND Justice?
Give us Grace to see The Cross.
