Are We Really Next to Nothing?


There has been much in the news lately about the multi-billion dollar Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, a massive, 17-mile long tunnel, a gleaming technological wonder designed to find (….at last!....) the key that will unlock the Mystery of the Universe. We have heard how a dedicated cadre of theoretical physicists, ten thousand strong, has been pouring over and analyzing data from The Collider, until now (Hallelujah!) they seem to be on the very brink of discovering "Higgs boson", an unseeable "particle" that is beyond all manner of matter itself. Higgs boson we are told is the bottom Bottom Line that could explain everything. It is the Ultimate Mindless It by which all things, Space, Time, Matter and Life itself, hold together and have their being. The Holy Grail. The elusive Whatever lurking behind The Theory of Everything.....

The so-called "God Particle".

I am convinced that the heart and mind of man longs desperately to know "The Bottom Line". But, at the same time, he wants The Bottom Line to be "particular" but not ...(heaven knows!)...a particular Being or Person. It must be a tangible, inanimate "it" but not an animate spirit Who. 

The Bottom Line? It must be matter.....never Mind.

Consequently, Modern Material-Man has conjured up a particular deity made in his own particular, (ie., material) image. Modern Material-Man has hedged his bet, foolishly stacked the deck and willfully contrived to put all of his soulless, deconstructed reductionist eggs into The Church of Scientism's Basket of Metaphysical Naturalism, a basket that simply must be a matter of matter even if it is not a matter of fact.. ..

Apparently, for Modern Material-Man, no other option is possible and no other explanation may be considered.. And so this popular "Particle God" gets all the attention in Modern Material Man's popular press. Metaphysical Naturalism is his fundamentalist decree. It is his Commandment. It is his Law. It is his unassailable truth dogmatically etched in stone.

And Thou Shalt Not Question or Buck the System.

How and why Material-Man finds himself in this "particular" corner, how and why he has chosen to travel down this particular collision course of his own utterly foolish self-negating prophecy, ...well, that's another question altogether. A question perhaps for another time...

But by reducing everything...including himself...to some theoretical derivative of mere matter born from the apparent Nothing that lies just beyond boson, Modern Material-Man, finds himself peering into the empty-minded abyss of utter meaninglessness. And then he proudly pats himself on the back for his dubious feat of philosophical alchemy, a magical feat by which he imagines life creating itself from essentially Nothing.....

"POOF!" Out of nowhere and nothing the universe(s) appear!"

Being from non-Being.

If one so chooses to come to Nothing, I suppose to Nothing one will come. And if, indeed that will be the fate of fundamentalist Material-Man, I hope that he won't know it when he gets there...his chosen, eternal destination.

One can only pray.
